W3HAC makes 450 contacts in ARRL 160 CW Contest

Posted by on December 9, 2014
Don K6ZO raised a temporary 160 meter antenna for the contest, consisting of two equal lengths of 24 gauge wire, each 130′ in length.  One wire was connected to the center conductor of the 50 ohm coax and the other wire was connected to the braid of the coax.  He made two plastic insulators to support each end of the wire.  The radiating wire was connected to the center conductor of the coax at roof level and the wire was strung to the top of the W3HAC mast (and insulated) and continued horizontally towards the front of the church, sloping down similarly to a guy wire.  The other wire ran the opposite direction and was tied off to a tree near the street.  The antenna was resonant on 1.850 mhz and had a 1:1 swr across 100 khz of the band.
