HacDC Amateur Radio club and its station, W3HAC, received some wide-reaching press this week on the venerable Amateur Radio Newsline. ARN host Don Wilbanks, AE5DW, made contact with W3HAC which had just activated the Washington Monument site to kick off the club’s participation in the ARRL National Parks on the Air event.
AE5DW was the first HF contact with W3HAC just shortly after 0:00 UTC on 1 January 2016. He made a recording of the QSO and replayed it on this week’s Amateur Radio Newsline(3:34 mark on the broadcast). HacDC Members and longtime operators the world over will also recognize the voice on the other end of the QSO recording – Pat Benson, K0OO. Many thanks to Don and ARN for bringing publicity for HacDC Amateur Radio Club and the NPOTA program.
This is most likely the first QSO for the entire ARRL NPOTA event as many other sites were activated that day.
This will certainly not be the last W3HAC activation of National Park sites in the year-long event. There are 28 National Park Service sites in the District of Columbia alone so the club is planning on continuing the series of activations in the coming weeks and year. Look for upcoming activations on the ARRL NPOTA Events Site, this blog, Twitter, or Facebook.
HacDC Amateur Radio Club looks forward to continuing to be a part of the DC community in 2016 by raising awareness of amateur radio and the District’s rich offering of National Park Sites.
